There’s something to be said about finding that perfect, cozy—and let’s not forget, stylish— sweater. You know: the one that works with jeans, wide-leg pants and an office-worthy knee-length skirt. The one you turn to to give you style direction/inspiration. The one you want to wear almost every day but can’t because you know people would start to notice. The one you consider buying in different colours to trick those same people that you’re wearing something completely different. You get the idea.
First: it’s all about the material. I don’t know if it’s because my skin is getting more sensitive as I get older, but these days I only want to hang out in cashmere. It’s super smooth against my skin and most importantly, warm. My first run-in with cashmere was a gift I received from a client (sadly, I can’t remember who that was—sorry!). The sweater was too big and boxy for me but I remember how ridiculously soft it was. Over the years I’ve always wanted to purchase a better-fitting cashmere sweater but I was in my mid-20s and let’s be honest, cashmere is expensive (admittedly at the time I was more into designer shoes too). Forward to many years later and brands began offering cashmere at lower prices and while I’ve purchased a few, they’ve always ended up pilling early on, losing their shape and/or weren’t the right cut.
Thankfully for all of us, brands and companies have smartened up and now offer better quality cashmere in a plethora of styles. Now, this isn’t to say that the cost has come down (there are still varying qualities of cashmere), and they still are priced higher than sweaters in acrylic or wool, but in my opinion many are worthy of the cost. I promise you. Find a style that fits you perfectly, handle it with care (dry clean, air-out or hand wash only!) and it will be in constant rotation for years to come.
