I’ve never worn espadrilles. I’ve always considered them a shoe meant for the pristine cobblestoned streets of Provence (FYI: espadrilles are of French origin). I’ve never considered them suitable for the mean streets of the 6ix, where the flimsy soles can crack on the hot pavement and the paper-thin fabric will get beat-up by the city’s dust andgrime, tout de suite. This spring, however, I noticed the influx of leather styles and sturdy soles which appear more resilient to urban demands like vintage furniture shopping and cruising Sunday farmers’ markets (ba ha, it’s a tough life).
I didn’t want to break the bank while I tested the look so I picked up this silver pair from Zara for just $49.90 CAD. With a leather upper and a fully panelled heel (versus one little seam holding it together in the back), they’re sturdy and stylish. I’ve been wearing them for a week and so far they’re a trusty and comfortable swap for my steady rotation of Birks/sneaks/flip-flops.
Here are more styles that caught my eye (and hopefully yours too)…
